TRENDS THIS WEEK:
Liberals lie; Conservatives believe

We at the Trends Research Institute are political atheists. “Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself,” observed Mark Twain. Neither idiots nor members of Congress, while believers in governance and the Constitution, we neither follow nor support the dictates and dictators of the entrenched two parties running and ruling America.

In one camp are so-called liberals and progressives, the hard core of the Democratic Party. On the Republican side are self-proclaimed staunch conservatives and moderate centrists.

Leading the pack on the Democratic side in the 2016 Presidential Reality Show is Hillary Clinton, anathema to the “broad-minded, tolerant and not bound by authoritarianism” definition of liberal. During her husband Bill’s presidency, carried though with President Obama, and by her deeds as secretary of state, Democrats enacted policies and legislation that have launched new wars, continued old ones, suspended civil liberties, canceled constitutional rights, initiated multinational trade agreements and imposed broad police-state powers on citizens.

Liberal no longer means “a belief in economic freedom and the greater individual participation in government.” As evidenced by current events, liberals continue to legislate polices that allow for more government intrusion rather than less, more control, more centralization of power, more foreign entanglements and more secrecy.

Yet, despite incontrovertible evidence, rather than face the facts, 90 percent of Democrats in the latest Gallup poll view President Obama favorably despite his overt violation of everything liberals profess to believe in.

On the Republican side is a cast of contestants in the Presidential Reality Show who profess to be conservatives, but have proven track records with a penchant for destruction rather than to “conserve.” They show no “disposition to preserve what is established.” And while the environment, for example, has been “established” for millions of years, “conservatives” clear-cut, frack, drill, deforest, blow tops off mountains, and pillage and plunder air, land and water in the name of commerce, industry — and their favorite rationale: to create jobs.

No longer referred to as people “preferring gradual development to abrupt change,” political “conservatives” feel morally justified to lob the first bomb at any nation they deem a threat, or an institution with a different value system.

Yet, unlike liberals’ constituency who, for example, oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, oppose renewing The Patriot Act, oppose foreign entanglements, oppose bigger defense budgets, etc., but lie to themselves and support a president and party that lied to them… conservative voters actually believe. They believe that building the bottom line is more important than the cost on the environment. They believe a strong military, invading unfriendly nations, imposing strict surveillance on citizens, a strong domestic police presence, “killing them over there before they come here” and global hegemony are “conservative” values.

Do all liberals lie and Conservatives believe? Of course not! But the majority does.

If it were not true, the two political parties they support would not monopolize federal, state and local governments. And this same pattern of denial and rigid belief rings true throughout most of the world.
